hi today we’ll be talking about Isles general modules writing task 2 so before we start let’s look at the type of questions we are asked for the task 2 so as we all know task 2 is an essay and there are five types of essay questions the first type is opinion so you will have a question that will ask you whether you agree or disagree to a statement or to what extent you agree or disagree the next type is a discussion type essay where you will be asked to discuss both views and sometimes you’re asked to give your opinion oftentimes not the next type is advantages and disadvantages for such questions once again you will have to state both advantages and disadvantages type 4 is problem and solution questions so in the federal question you will be given a problem and you will be asked to suggest solutions to the problem so you will have to discuss the problem and as well as suggest solutions to the problem and the last type is a two-part question now you will know what kind of question this is when I show you an example of it so today I’ll be showing you an example of each question type along with their structure it’s very important in the IELTS writing section that you follow the structure according to a question type so your first step for the task 2 would be to identify what kind of a question it is and then follow the structure for that type of question ok so as I just mentioned the first tip is to structure your essay let’s look at this question now we’re looking at an example of an opinion type question that is an agree or disagree type question so for an opinion type question the structure is as followed you have an introductory paragraph a main body paragraphs another main body paragraphs and a conclusion you can have more than two main body paragraphs depending on the content of your writing however I strongly suggest that you stick to only two paragraphs because as it has been shown from experience that when you attempt more than two body paragraphs you lose time and you don’t generally have time to complete the conclusion properly so just stick to two body paragraphs okay so the introduction should have at least three sentences sentence one would be a paraphrase paraphrasing of the question sentence two would be a thesis statement which is it you have to state whether you agree or disagree with the paraphrased question and sentence three will be an outline of what you are you are going to talk about in DFA so let’s look at the question first and I’ll go through each and every sentences in the example that I have for you okay so the question says some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programs for example working for a charity improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children to what extent do you agree or disagree so the question asked to what extent you agree or disagree that means it’s asking for your opinion and not only is it asking for your opinion you have to mention the extent of your opinion whether you agree to it to a very high extent or whether you agree to a moderate extend and you agree and both disagree equally okay so let’s look at the first introduction so sentence one would be paraphrasing the question it is argued that volunteering should be made part of the school curriculum that’s your paraphrasing the next statement should be your TC statement this essay agrees with that suggestion completely because of the benefits it brings to people so you mentioned that the essay agrees completely is a keyword it shows the extent of your of how much you agree and the last sentence is an outline sentence so you have to mention what this essay will be about the essay will first look at how voluntary work can help students develop soft skills and then discuss how these extracurricular activities are valued by universities and employers so you basically give the reader an introduction to your body paragraph to watch your essays about and we are done with the introduction okay let’s move on to the body paragraph I would like to take this opportunity to just mention to whoever is unknown to the body body paragraph structure so generally whenever we are writing an essay whether it be for the aisles or just school essays or TOEFL GRE your body paragraph should at least have a topic sentence that is the first sentence which will summarize or introduce your body the second sentence will be your explanation of the topic sentence you can also call it your supporting sentence and the third sentence would be an example so you’ll have a topic sentence which will introduce the topic of the paragraph you’ll have explanation of the topic sentence or supporting ideas and then you’ll have an example which again should support your topic sentence every body paragraph should have the same structure let’s look at the first body paragraph so the topic sentence would be the first sentence education should not be limited to strictly academic pursuits and those in education should also develop life skills such as teamwork empathy and self-discipline and one of the best ways to hone these aptitudes is through community service so there you go this is your topic sentence you’re introducing your body paragraph the next sentence is explanation of the topic sentence so let’s see what we have here serving those less fortunate than ourselves teaches us many lessons including how to work with people from other backgrounds and the value of hard work so this line is adding information to your previous topic sentence and then we have an example for example I personally volunteered to spend six weeks in Africa teaching disadvantaged children and this led to a much higher work ethic when I returned to my studies so we have our example here just a quick note when you’re trying to think of an example don’t stress over it just make up an example it can be from a known universal fact or it can be something you read in a magazine I the facts don’t even have to match up you can even write just make up numbers or just write something from personal experience nobody will be grading you for the authenticity of your example as long as it’s relevant to your topic you can use any example that you want ok so similarly we have another body paragraph in which the topic sentences many colleges and companies are also increasingly looking for this type of experience so you just introduced another type another idea another topic that you need community service because many companies and colleges are looking for that experience more school school leaders have the same grades and charitable works can help set you apart from the herd what you have done outside the classroom ok so um this is the explanation of the topic sentence what you have done outside the classroom is often the thing that differentiates you from everyone else and gets you that coveted spot and then you add your example for example Cambridge and Oxford you see thousands of applications from straight-a students every year and only except a few percentage of applicants now this example have used Cambridge in Oxford you don’t even have to know the names of universities you can just say for example the most famous universities in the world or you know you can just add a number here as well like 80 percent of them they won’t they won’t hold you accountable for the for your for the source of information and we move on to the conclusion so in conclusion remember the conclusion should contain a summary of your essay which means it should contain the reasons for your body paragraph and your opinion so this is very important in an opinion type question make sure that you have your opinion at the beginning and at the end of the essay so in conclusion teenagers should be made to partake in unpaid work as part of their schooling because so now you will be summarizing your body paragraphs it will help them learn things they wouldn’t ordinarily learn from the teachers and I’ll also boost their chances of getting into third level education so when you say they should be made made to partake this is your opinion and then when you say because it will help them do this is this your summarizing the body paragraph so there you go you have an opinion essay all done
